Seniors Can Reduce Heart Risks

Heart disease is the number one ailment in the elderly population. Each year, millions of seniors are diagnosed with coronary heart disease. This can lead to other heart issues. There is now medical proof stating that increasing statin doses can help reduce the risks of heart issues. This is not a cure and there are no guarantees, but the studies have revealed that statin can in fact reduce risks. Below is a list containing statin facts and tips.

1. Increased doses of Lipitor or other cholesterol lowering medications has been shown to reduce the risk of developing heart related health problems.

2. In combination with medication, lowering bad cholesterol can reduce the chances of heart disease.

3. Seniors who have coronary heart disease should try to get their bad cholesterol levels below 100mg per each deciliter of blood.

4. High doses of statin has been shown to lower cholesterol levels to 70.

5. In addition to reducing the chances of developing heart disease, seniors can also reduce the likelihood of stroke and heart attack.

6. Regardless of the current heart condition, lowering bad cholesterol can have many health benefits for seniors, including lower blood pressure, lower mortality rates and the reduction of risks of coronary heart disease.

7. Seniors who are currently taking medication to lower their cholesterol should speak to a doctor regarding the possible benefits of increasing the dosage.

Heart Health Relies on Exercise

Many seniors are turning to exercise to improve heart health. Studies have revealed that a simple daily exercise program can be very beneficial for seniors. Not only will exercise strengthen and tone muscles, but it will also improve heart health. In addition to the physical benefits, exercise will also improve mood and may help with sleep issues.

Before starting any exercise program, Home Care Houston wants to remind all seniors to check with their doctor first to make sure that the exercises they’re doing are safe.

1. Make sure all exercises are paced. You do not want to go too fast or over-do it. Give your muscles time to relax between exercises.

2. Individuals who have heart failure should always exercise in a controlled climate. Do not exercise outside in the extreme heat or cold.

3. During all exercises, make sure to have water nearby. Staying hydrated is one of the most important factors of a healthy exercise regime.

4. If you become fatigued, stop the exercise. Do not exercise if you have not been feeling well or if you experience any shortness of breath.

5. Pain can be an indicator of other health problems. If you experience any pain, stop the exercise, especially if the pain is in the chest.

6. After all exercises, check your pulse 15 minutes after you have stopped. Your pulse rate should be lower than 120.

Seniors Can Take Steps to Prevent Heart Disease

At Home Care Houston we care for a number of seniors, and many believe that there is nothing they can do to reduce their chances of heart disease. This is not true though, in fact, making changes to a daily diet is a great way to lower the risk. It is not necessary to revamp your entire diet, but small changes can make a big difference. The following list provides some simple ways to alter a daily diet and greatly reduce the chances of developing heart disease.

1. Reduce the intake of cholesterol and unhealthy fats. This is one of the most important steps to lower cholesterol as well as the risk of heart disease.

2. Eat foods with low-fat protein. This can include fish, poultry and egg whites. Flaxseed, walnuts, beans and peas are high in protein and low in fat.

3. Increase the intake of fruits and vegetables. These foods are rich in fiber and low in calories. They also contain substances that can reduce the risk of heart disease.

4. Eat whole grains instead of bread with refined flour and cereals with sugar.

5. Reduce salt intake. Don’t forget that processed foods contain high amounts of salt. Reduce the intake of processed foods and avoid the addition of salt while cooking and eating at the table.

6. Eat in moderation and avoid filling your plate. Keep portions of food balanced.

7. Create daily menus to help you plan ahead.
