Seniors Can Reduce Heart Risks

Home Care Houston helps seniors remain active and healthy in their own homes.

Heart disease is the number one ailment in the elderly population. Each year, millions of seniors are diagnosed with coronary heart disease. This can lead to other heart issues. There is now medical proof stating that increasing statin doses can help reduce the risks of heart issues. This is not a cure and there are no guarantees, but the studies have revealed that statin can in fact reduce risks. Below is a list containing statin facts and tips.

1. Increased doses of Lipitor or other cholesterol lowering medications has been shown to reduce the risk of developing heart related health problems.

2. In combination with medication, lowering bad cholesterol can reduce the chances of heart disease.

3. Seniors who have coronary heart disease should try to get their bad cholesterol levels below 100mg per each deciliter of blood.

4. High doses of statin has been shown to lower cholesterol levels to 70.

5. In addition to reducing the chances of developing heart disease, seniors can also reduce the likelihood of stroke and heart attack.

6. Regardless of the current heart condition, lowering bad cholesterol can have many health benefits for seniors, including lower blood pressure, lower mortality rates and the reduction of risks of coronary heart disease.

7. Seniors who are currently taking medication to lower their cholesterol should speak to a doctor regarding the possible benefits of increasing the dosage.

Aging Americans continue to live independently well into their latter years. While they may be in good health today, their increasing age presents a greater risk that a medical emergency could occur while in their own home.

As a result, it is important that their home environments are made safe and secure to avoid accidents, and that plans are in place should an emergency occur while they are home alone.

Consider installing grab bars in the home, especially the bathrooms, to assist with balance and help prevent falls.  Transfer benches, hand-held shower devices and non-slip mats are other helpful tools to keep seniors safe in when bathing.

Ensure that someone is available to help with routine household duties such as repairs and housework so a senior does not attempt tasks that are outside of their physical capabilities; a family member can help with this, or a regular cleaning service can be arranged. Daily phone calls should be made by family or friends so it can be ensured that he/she is safe; or there are non-medical home care services available which can come by the home to assist and check in.

Personal Response System services are also available, which monitor the safety of elders 24 hours a day and provide personal alarms which notify emergency workers should an accident occur and the senior be unable to get to a phone.

Unfortunately, accidents and medical emergencies can happen to even the most proactive seniors and their families. It is important that family members are aware of their elderly relative’s wishes if an emergency should occur so that their care and affairs can be handled appropriately.
